Improve the Service Conditions of Library and Information Professionals working in Anna Centinary Library, Chennai

The Anna Centinary Library has been established during the DMK period in Chennai and nearly hundreds of Library Professionals have been appointed in various positions to run the library effectively. After the AIADMK assumed the power, the developments in the library have been stopped and the Govt. has announced to shift the library to some other place and the present campus would be used as Children Hospital. The issue knocked the door of the High Court and the case is going on.

This is known to all. But the professionals appointed in various positions in the library have not been regularised and annual increments which are given to all the Gevernment employees are being denied to them for the past three years is an unknown fact. The employees are not opposing to shift the library from the present building. They are ready work in any place and render the service to the users. The non regularisation of service and the denial of annual increement for the past three years annoyed them and has creatred an uncertainity among them in life. They are very much worrying about their future.

The Govt. of Tamilnadu headed by Honorable Chief Minister Puratchi Thalaivi Amma should turn its mercyfull eyes towards these poor and unlucky Library and Information Professionals and bring the light in their life by considering their guinune demands.

Retirement age of Librarians

It is very sorry to see the notification of MHRD that the retireemnt age of Librarians has not been raised to 65 on par with other teachers. The reason for non raising the age is a silly one. If the reason is a true one why the librarian post in most of the university libraries are kept vacant and unfilled. If sufficient number of qualified persons are available why for so many years the posts are kept unfilled. It is a highly condemnable one.

Treat Librarians as Teachers

Some of the senior Professors in Library and Informaton science like Prof.Lahari, Prof. Mangala who are the members in the UGC expert cimmittee feel that the Change of designation as Lecturer for the College/ University librarians is not a necessary one as the terminology LIBRARIAN is universally accepted one. My question is that is it an acceptable one? Who are they to decide it. Only the Practicing Librarians can understand the difficulties and problems of the librarians working in academic institutions
